As functional mushrooms become more mainstream, consumers have more options than ever before. Products containing Lion's Mane, Reishi and Cordyceps can now be found in capsules, powders, coffees, and functional foods.

But growing demand has also created a challenge: product quality varies significantly between brands.

Understanding where mushrooms come from, how they're grown, and what part of the mushroom is actually used can help you make a more informed choice.

Why Quality Matters

Functional mushrooms contain naturally occurring compounds such as beta-glucans, triterpenes, and antioxidants that are associated with many of their potential health benefits. Research into these compounds continues to grow, particularly in areas such as immune function, cognition, and metabolic health.

The problem is that not every supplement contains meaningful amounts of these compounds.

Independent testing has shown that some commercially available mushroom supplements contain either very low levels, or in some cases no detectable levels, of the bioactive compounds consumers expect based on product labels and marketing claims. This highlights the importance of ingredient quality, standardisation, and independent verification.

Fruiting Bodies vs Myceliated Grain

One of the most important differences between mushroom supplements is whether they are made from fruiting bodies or myceliated grain.

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, consisting of the cap and stem. This is the part most commonly associated with higher concentrations of beta-glucans and other bioactive compounds.

Mycelium, on the other hand, is the root-like network that helps the fungus grow. When mycelium is cultivated on grain and the entire material is dried and milled, the final product often contains a significant amount of grain starch alongside the fungal material.

As a result, supplements made primarily from myceliated grain may contain lower concentrations of the compounds consumers are typically seeking.

Why Beta-Glucans Matter

Beta-glucans are among the most studied compounds found in functional mushrooms and are widely regarded as one of the key markers of product quality.

Research has found that fruiting bodies can contain substantially higher levels of beta-glucans than grain-grown mycelium. In Lion's Mane, for example, fruiting body extracts commonly contain beta-glucan levels in the 30–50% range, while some myceliated grain products test significantly lower.

For consumers, this matters because the concentration of active compounds directly influences the quality and potential efficacy of a supplement.

The Importance of Testing

Another important consideration is testing.

Mushrooms are natural bioaccumulators, meaning they can absorb substances from their growing environment. Depending on where and how they are cultivated, this may include contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, or microbial pathogens.

Independent third-party testing helps verify both safety and potency by confirming:

  • Identity of the mushroom species
  • Beta-glucan content
  • Heavy metal screening
  • Microbial testing
  • Product purity

Without this level of testing, consumers have limited visibility into what they're actually buying.

What to Look for When Choosing a Mushroom Supplement

When comparing products, a few simple checks can help separate high-quality supplements from lower-quality alternatives:

  • Look for 100% fruiting body ingredients.
  • Check whether beta-glucan content is disclosed.
  • Look for evidence of independent third-party testing.
  • Review sourcing and cultivation information.
  • Be cautious of vague descriptions such as "proprietary blend" or "myceliated grain" without further detail.
  • Choose products manufactured in facilities that follow recognised quality standards such as GMP or FSSC certification.
